General Mac troubleshooting to resolve common issues

Here are some general steps to try if your game is crashing on an Apple Macintosh computer.

Repair Permissions

  1. To open Disk Utility, from the Applications folder, open Utilities, and then double-click the Disk Utility icon.

  2. In the column on the left, click your startup disk.

  3. Click the First Aid tab, and then click Repair Disk Permissions. Disk Utility will reset any files and folders with incorrect settings.

Delete your GTA Preferences File, if applicable.  For example:

  • GTA3 Retail and Digital
    • ~/Library/Preferences/Grand Theft Auto 3 Preferences/
  • GTAVC Retail and Digital
    • ~/Library/Preferences/Grand Theft Auto - Vice City Preferences/
  • GTASA Retail and Digital
    • ~/Library/Preferences/Grand Theft Auto - San Andreas Preferences
  • GTA3 Mac App Store
    • ~/Library/Application Support/Grand Theft Auto 3/
  • GTAVC Mac App Store
    • ~/Library/Application Support/Grand Theft Auto - Vice City/
  • GTASA Mac App Store
    • ~/Library/Application Support/Grand Theft Auto - San Andreas/

Try Running as a Different User: Logging in as a different user can help to determine whether the problem is with the hardware or a preference/setting file tied to your normal profile.  If the issue still occurs on a different User, the issue is hardware-related or caused by system files not tied to a user.  If the issue only happens on one User, the problem could be related to a preference or setting unique to that user.

Reboot in Safe Mode: To boot in Safe Mode, hold down the Shift key while restarting the computer.  This forces a directory check of the root volume, clears the dynamic loader cache, and only loads the necessary items.  This could repair the necessary items to allow the game to run after booting regularly.  

Re-Download the Apple Combo Update for your OS: If you are experiencing performance-related issues that might related to hardware acceleration or other Apple drivers, try finding the Combo Update for your operating system.  If you previously only installed the Individual OSX update, the Combo Update will ensure that you have all patches/fixes through your current operation system version. To locate the Combo Update for your software, check the Apple website or try Googling the name of your OS:
