Why won't GTA IV work on Windows 8.1

I have tried everything to get this game working. Adding files that people say work to the folders I have done the Games For Windows Live re download and things people say and the typical fix would be the change the compatibility for the game but I cant find that option! I need a surefire way to get this game working. 64 bit computer if that matters. OH and I bought it from Steam.

If you already have games for windows live installed, perhaps remove it via control panel, then install the version from the above link. I right clicked and chose to run as administrator.

I have GTA IV Steam version, running on Windows 8.1 x64 with this method.

GFWL. That is all I had to do in order to get it to work for me.

Is the initial social club menu opening, the one which allows you to log in or play offline?
If so, are you getting any error dialogs shown after clicking play, or is it just not loading?

@-FX2K- GFWL. That is all I had to do in order to get it to work for me.

Ya the Social Club opens and I can log in but when I click play my Steam status is no longer set to "in game" and it doesn't launch.

I'm not sure then, sorry, but I do have it working on 3 x Windows 8.1 machines.
All three have Episodes from Liberty City too, maybe that has something to do with it.

I recall having to use the EFLC version in order to activate GTA IV on my Sons PC, activating via vanilla GTAIV wouldn't work due to GFWL and CD key issues.

This is a simple UAC issue, i promise. Just set the GTA.EXE file to run in compatibility mode for WIndows 7, then set the same file to (Run as administrator). Next right click the "launchgta4.exe" and also choose run as administrator. As long as you have your .net and windows live updated, or are running xliveless it will work....doing it right now myself...modded and everything. Have fun.

GTA IV Does Work With Windows 8 and 8.1

To get it to work: 1. Go to the cd and GTAIV folder and right click setup and click properties.

                           2. Click compatibility tab and run in compatibility mode with vista service pack 2.

                           3. Go through the installation as you would normally.

4.When done you must download a patch from http://support.rockstargames.com/hc/en-us/articles/200145406-Grand-Theft-Auto-IV-Patch-7-Title-Update-v-1-0-7-0-English-1-0-6-1-Russian-1-0-5-2-Japanese-

5.When done with that, download windows for live client

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/pc/DownloadClient

                           6. when down with that your ready to start the game and it will ask for the cd product code. enter and it should work.

If not try this, go to program files or program files x86 if runnin a 64bit operating system.

find and click Rockstar Games, then grand theft auto folder.

then right click gtaiv and run in compatibility mode with vista service pack 2.

If you had windows 8 and updated to windows 8.1 a game reinstallation may be required for it to work.

Also driver updates may be required too.

Check with your pc manufacture for drivers.

#1 Its not Rockstars fault their game has a few issues on an operating system which was not in existence when the game was made. Why wont my floppy disc fit in that CD-Rom Slot and work?

I have not needed to run as admin, set any compatibility mode or anything. Simply removed any GFWL and reinstalled from the link above.

I promise you, this is just a UAC issue. I had the same problem and i got it working in 20 mins. Dont listen to anyone else, trust me. Once you have all the updates instaled and xliveless if you need....make sure to set both the gtaIV .exe and the launcher to both run as administrator as well as making sure that both are set for windows 7 compatibility and the game will work as long as you havent added anything to screw it up. Im playing it right now on win 8.1

What Rock Star needs to do is Give working product keys for GTA 4 and stop sending people off to other sites for help. Ben waiting for a week. I got this game new years back and I could play offline but never online because of a bad key. 3 years it took Rock Star to give me a key and that did not last long and a 3rd one was given to me and still can't get online. And there waiting game they play is sad. I am at my limit with them and there running me around the bush all the time and nothing gets fixed.

I rum a MSI Laptop GT70 gamming i7 with 4 gigs video graphics,16 gigs ram. Its does work on 8.1 if your computer is good enough. Duel core may not be fast enough. Right now I can't play live my Key is bad and Rock Star is not giving me a working key. Try this update > > gfwlivesetup - marketplace that helped me.

GFWL is already updated and running, it works currently for Fallout 3 without issue.
I think my computer is able to run GTA4, i have a i7 3770k, 16gb ddr3-1600, P8Z77-V motherboard, Asus GTX 780 3Gb video card and Samsung 840 Pro 512Gb ssd. I still get securom error on windows 8.1 when launching gta4. I think i will switch on Watch Dogs, and not buy gta5 in case of future securon issues...

you need to bypass securerom. It might be a tad illegal but after what Rockstar put me through i didn't give it a second though.
Only do this if everything else stopped working.
You might need xlivless to.

they should at least respond to my tickets which they haven't responded to. Stop damage controlling.

I don't disagree, they should respond to your tickets on the subject... but... as I stated initially, the game does work, you just need to play around with it as suggested by others above, it was also made before such operating systems where in existence.

**I've tried all day to fit my 5.25 floppy disc into my CD Rom drive, but it just don't work!!!
I demand an explanation from Verbatim...

Of course, with some fiddling around, I could install a drive capable of using it, but why should I.. it should work with future technologies right!

Hi,

I bought the game (disc edition) yesterday and I installed all the discs, but I can't get it work. I have Windows 8.1 and I can confirm:
1st: I installed the newest windows live (because I had to create an account
2nd: I created an rockstar social account
3rd: I updated the game with the posted patch
and still the game isn't going to run. I try to run the game as follows: I start the game via launchgta executable; login to rockstar social then the disc icon appears and nothing else happens, no error, no information so far. I'm looking forward to read some new informations ;-)

its because of sucrueROM you need to bypass it by downloading a by-passer.

I have the same problem. I have also tried everything: reinstalling the game, GFWL, DirectX, etc. NOTHING worked. I cannot even have the benchmark working, for it crashes at the end of it. Of course, I have reported my problems to , but none of their fixes solved my crashes. OF COURSE. I used to play it on Seven with no problem, though. I paid for a game that I could not even play anymore. You know what the problem is? Windows 8.1. is garbage, total trash and GTAIV is a poor - very poor - port from console. I have no idea of what to do but installing Seven on another drive just to play this game. THANKS FOR ALL THE HOURS THAT I HAVE LOST and Microsoft.

The best solution to play a game like this on Windows 8.1 is ti play Watch_Dogs.
New computers came with Windows 8.1. I changed my computer and Rockstar Game is not compatible. No prob. Thanks to Ubisoft that made a gta like game, more beautiful (on PC) and more fluid, and most of all, it works on Windows 8.1 on my new computer. Bye bye Rockstar. You lost a customer.

GFWL + Windows 8.1 Fix, working
I got it working on W8.1 now

The key part is, that you have to turn off "two-step verification" in your Live profile, the old GFWL client doesn't seem to support this new-ish security method implemented by MS, and thus fails to log in correctly. (If not activated you can skip this step)

  1. Log in to your Live accout at https://account.live.com
  2. On the left panel click on "Security info"
  3. Click "Disable two-step verification"
  4. If you installed GFWL from DS installer, uninstall it, reboot, install GFWL client from http://www.xbox.com/en-US/LIVE/PC/DownloadClient with compatibility mode set to Windows 8, and run as admin.
  5. Set all the .exe files in your GTA IV folder to run as admin and Windows 8 compatibility mode.
  6. Set GFWLClient.exe and GFWLive.exe in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games for Windows - LIVE\Client" folder to run as admin and Windows 8 compatibility mode.
  7. Copy all dll files and the dll.cat file starting with xlive**** from C:\Windows\SysWOW64 to C:\Windows\System32
  8. Run GFWLClient.exe and log in.
  9. Start LaunchGTAIV as ADMIN. Thats it.

Have fun! and remember! Every step is important...
