Why does my GTA V keep freezing?

My GTA V is brand new, no scratches and the online and single player just keeps on freezing my xbox. I have tried to:

  • Clear cache
  • Delete the parts and reinstall
  • Tried installing disc 2 If anyone knows how to fix this or why it's doing this then please tell me.

personally I advice arcade & even hdd xbox users to use 2 faster than 15mbs 16gb flash drives, in particular a sandisk cruser blade in rear port with the 'install disk', any updates & gamesaves executed from there & a corsair flash voyager in front hub for the 'play disk' installation.

doing so prevents the spinning disks in xbox from potentially becoming stressed by the high capacity streaming / seek-reading requirements of GTA V [more resources needed for the online component]

with the above setup, the spinning disks are only utilized upon first booting the game up required for DRM

any extensive system resource heavy software certainly has/is able to stress hardware to it's limits. when one experiences heaps of rendering issues [pop-in/up environments, no sound, excessive freezing, etc.] could very well be a sign of a tired hdd and/or optical drive.

Try doing a full clear of the Game Data (which would include the install files). That includes clearing the patches, but you can keep your save files for single player to keep your progress.

Clearing the Game Data:
(Prior to clearing the game data, ensure that you back up any Save Data so it doesn't become deleted)
1. Press the Guide button on your controller, go to Settings, and select System Settings.
2. Select Storage or Memory.
3. Highlight any storage device, and then press A on your controller.
4. Select Games and Apps.
5. Scroll through the list until you find the game you want to clear the data, once you find it press A on your controller.
6. Delete any game related files which are not "save" files, if these files are deleted they cannot be recovered.
7. Once all of the files have been deleted, go back to the Xbox Dashboard Home.
8. Reboot the game.

I don't think there's anything you can do, it happens to me quite a bit, but if I can get passed the first 10-15 minutes, it's good. Did just like you, installed both discs, didn't change jack. I know for a while staying in the yellow mustang from cop capacity after the mission ended was a sure thing, freeze within a minute...

I mean, there something you could do that is just a useful(less) as clearing the cache is delete all the non profile specific content for GTA V, then install another game (doesn't matter which but a big one like at least as much as GTA V's disk one... i.e. somewhere around 8GB), and then reinstall/download what needs to be.

If the problem comes from a defective sector, it should solve itself like that... doubt it will do anything though.

I am trying the solution now. What I don't get though is, it worked before and it suddenly just started to freeze my xbox. My xbox is the premium but my friends have that one too but their one works fine.

I want to know what type of Xbox you have. If you have an old fat one that you've been using for a few years then I know what your problem is. Dying hardware.GTA V pushes our consoles to their maximum capacity. I know this because the more hardware is utilized the more power the system draws. Well up until GTA V my Xbox maybe ran at 70% utilization when gaming but now its hitting new numbers. I monitor my entire systems power draw through a LCD panelled battery backup. Most games run around 267w total draw but GTA V? I've seen it hit 297w. Thats incredibly higher draw from these old systems. So basically whats happening here is this game is acting like a stress test on your components. There is a fault in the CPU/GPU/memory/etc and GTA V is exposing it. This happens all the time in the PC gaming scene where a new game comes out that stresses your hardware far more than others and the game starts to crash. It almost always turns out to be hardware malfunctions.Anyways I have other signs of hardware malfunction in the form of GPU artifacting such as random flickering and flashing of corrupt polygons and textures. If you ever see anything like black flashes on the screen, your GPU is on its way out the door and you should prepare for it to kick the bucket soon.

Is it possible for you to please try installing to a different storage device? It could be an issue with the installation location as well.
