BattlEye Troubleshooting for Grand Theft Auto V

Last Updated: February 11, 2026

Question: How can I troubleshoot issues with BattlEye?

Answer: Depending on the issue, the following methods may help:

Check to make sure BattlEye is running on your PC

  1. Close Grand Theft Auto V

  2. Open the Rockstar Games Launcher

  3. Select Settings in the Rockstar Games Launcher

  4. Enable BattlEye by selecting the checkbox

  5. Launch Grand Theft Auto V and join Grand Theft Auto Online

Ensure BattlEye is launching properly alongside GTA Online

Note: Third-party servers may provide instructions to launch GTA Online without BattlEye since those servers do not require BattlEye to be running for your PC to connect.

Launching GTA Online without BattlEye will not allow the game to connect to official GTA Online servers. To ensure BattlEye is being prompted to open correctly when GTA Online is launched, check the following for your respective platform:

  • Your Rockstar Games Launcher Launch arguments

    1. Open the Rockstar Games Launcher

    2. Select Settings

    3. Select Grand Theft Auto V under My installed games

    4. Scroll down to Launch arguments and ensure the text box is blank

  • Your Steam PC Launch Options

    1. Please consult the following Steam Support article to check if your Steam Launch Options have been customized: https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/7D01-D2DD-D75E-2955

    2. Your Steam Launch Options should be blank

  • Your Epic Games Launcher Launch Options

    1. Open the Epic Games Launcher

    2. Select Library

    3. Select the three dots under Grand Theft Auto V

    4. Select Manage

    5. Scroll down to Launch Options and ensure the option is disabled and that the text box is blank

Make sure that you are opening the game directly via your respective platform (Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, Epic Games Launcher) and not from a desktop shortcut, .bat file, or Command Prompt.

Add BattlEye to your antivirus exceptions

  1. Locate where BattlEye is installed:

    • Rockstar Games Launcher default: C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto V\BattlEye

    • Steam default: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Grand Theft Auto V\BattlEye

    • Epic Games Launcher default: C:\Program Files\Epic Games\GTAV\BattlEye

  2. Copy the path to your BattlEye folder from your respective launcher

Additional troubleshooting

If you are encountering errors, follow the steps to verify the installed game files for your launcher. If that does not resolve your issue, please consult the troubleshooting information for BattlEye at the link below:

Known issues

BattlEye is known to not work properly with the following graphics modification software:

  • ReShade

  • Special_K

While BattlEye will still allow you to launch GTA Online, these mods will be disabled during gameplay.

These programs may prevent launch of the game or work incorrectly when the game is running due to BattlEye’s security measures, even if BattlEye is added to the program’s exception list. If the above troubleshooting does not resolve your problem, try using another antivirus software.
