Grand Theft Auto 3 - GTA 3 PS2: Save game will not load / 'corrupted' save game

Last Updated: December 17, 2023

Procedure to troubleshoot and log information for GTA3 errors with the memory card.

Toggling the PS2 display options:

  1. Boot the Playstation 2 with no disc in the drive.

  2. Highlight System Configuration, press the triangle button.

  3. Highlight Playstation Driver and press the triangle button.

  4. Try to toggle the disc speed between it's current setting and the other available setting (so if its set to normal, change it to fast, and vice versa).

  5. Exit back to the main menu then insert the game disc and try again.

  6. If it still doesn't work then Boot the Playstation 2 with no disc in the drive again and follow the instructions detailed in steps 2-3 but instead of selecting disc speed, select the option for Texture Mapping.

  7. Again toggle between the two available settings.

  8. Exit back to the main menu then insert the game disc and try again.

Using the Automatic-Diagnosis feature:

  1. Go to the main menu (again after booting the Playstation 2 with no disc in the drive).

  2. Press the triangle button.

  3. Highlight Console and press the triangle button again. This should give the option to turn the Diagnosis feature on or off.

  4. Turn Diagnosis on and then start the Playstation 2 with the game CD in the drive.

General tips:

  1. Save to more than one slot. Rather than save over one game, save the game over a spread of three save slots, keeping at least two other saved games available for loading.

  2. Do not park more than the standard allocation of cars in the garage. one car in Portland, two cars in Staunton Island and three cars in Shoreside Vale.

  3. Try saving the game with no cars in the garage if the above info does not work. If you do save cars, then save standards such as taxis and stallions.

  4. If the game does not load up on the first attempt, reset the PS2 and try to load the game another few times. If it does load back up then follow the tips above to try and ensure it does not happen again

Information we need:

  • How many GTA 3 save games have been saved to the memory card? (Take this info from in-game, not from mem card browser as this only shows the one instance in which all other save games are reorded.

  • Which cars are in the garage when it would not load (presuming you could not get back into the game to empty the garage)

  • All details from sys config (highlight system configuration, press Triangle and make a note of all available info)

  • Whether the user has modified the PS2 in any way (including use of action replay type software)

  • Do you have similar problems with any other games?

  • Does the PS2 have a DVD software update (installed with DVD remote accessory)?

  • Are any third party peripherals in use?
