Last Updated: September 18, 2025

Question: How can I resolve my connection issues while playing GTA Online on Xbox Series X|S? Some of the error messages I receive include:

  • Saving failed

  • Connection to the session lost due to an unknown network error

  • Timed out locating session

  • Failed to find a compatible GTA Online session

  • Rockstar Games Services are unavailable

Answer: Below are actions that may help if you are experiencing connection issues or receiving connection error messages while playing GTA Online.

Check your network connection and Rockstar Games Service availability

If the GTA Online status currently says Up, the problem may be related to some connection types conflicting with other players, or other problems with your network setup.

Clear your Xbox Series X|S cache

  1. Turn off your console

  2. Unplug your console from its power source

  3. Wait two minutes

  4. Plug the power cable back into its power source

  5. Turn your console back on

Clear Your Xbox Series X|S alternate MAC addresses

  1. Press the Xbox button on your controller

  2. Select Settings

  3. Under General, select Network Settings

  4. Select Advanced Settings

  5. Select Alternate MAC Address

  6. Select Clear

Check your internet connection speed

Use an online speed test to measure your connection speed. Below are good targets for minimum upload and download speeds:

  • Download Speed: 7.5 Mbps

  • Upload Speed (recommended): 1 Mbps

  • Upload Speed (minimum): .5 Mbps

Check your Network Address Translation (NAT) Type settings

  1. Press the Xbox button on your controller

  2. Select Settings

  3. Under General, select Network Settings

Your NAT Type and connection type should be displayed on the right side of the screen. If the NAT Type shows as Unknown, select Test NAT Type.

A more open NAT Type will have fewer conflicts and connectivity issues with other players. Below are definitions for the different NAT Types:

  • OPEN NAT Type: Can play games with any NAT Type

  • MODERATE NAT Type: Can play games with open or moderate NAT Types

  • STRICT NAT Type: Can only play games with open NAT Types

Check your Firewall / Router for NAT Type restrictions

If you have a firewall or other network hardware, such as a router, you may need to access them to change your NAT Type. Sometimes this configuration change is caused by opening or forwarding other network ports.

Check your Open Network Ports

The Xbox network requires the following ports to be open:

  • Port 88 (UDP)

  • Port 53 (UDP and TCP)

  • Port 3544 (UDP)

  • Port 80 (TCP)

  • Port 500 (UDP)

  • Port 4500 (UDP)

GTA Online requires the following ports to be open:

  • Port 6672 (UDP)

  • Port 61455 (UDP)

  • Port 61457 (UDP)

  • Port 61456 (UDP)

  • Port 61458 (UDP)

Change your Domain Name Servers (DNS)

  1. Press the Xbox button on your controller

  2. Select Settings

  3. Under General, select Network Settings

  4. Select Advanced settings

    • Make sure to write down your existing DNS servers from this screen

  5. Select DNS settings

  6. Select Manual

  7. Enter the following DNS servers:

    • If using IPv4:

      • Primary DNS: 8.8.8.8

      • Secondary DNS: 8.8.4.4

    • If using IPv6:

      • Primary DNS: 2001:4860:4860::8888

      • Secondary DNS: 2001:4860:4860::8844

Reset Your Network Router

You can reset your router by unplugging it and leaving it unplugged for about 10 minutes. Restart the game client and check to see if your issue is resolved.
