Authentication Failed when Signing in Using 2-Step Verification
Last Updated: October 4, 2024
Question: What should I do if I am receiving an error stating that authentication failed when trying to sign in to my Rockstar Games account with a 2-Step Verification code?
Answer: If you are receiving an error that your 2-Step Authentication failed, there is a chance that the authenticator you are using has become desynchronized with the 2-Step Verification service.
- Ensure that your clock on your authenticator app / machine is set to the correct local time, date, and time zone
- Enable any time sync settings on your authenticator app / program
On Android using Google Authenticator:
- Go to the main menu on the Google Authenticator app
- Select Settings
- Select Time correction for codes
- Select Sync now
- On the next screen, the app will confirm that the time has been synced, and you should now be able to use your verification codes to sign in
Note: The sync will only affect the internal time of your Google Authenticator app, and will not change your device’s Date & Time settings.
On iOS:
- Open the Settings app of your iPhone home screen
- Select General
- Select Date & Time
- Disable Set Automatically Option and re-enable again
- Reboot your device
Authenticator sync settings:
- If your authenticator has an option to sync the clock, make sure it is enabled. Check the support documentation for your chosen authenticator app for additional information
Android / Windows phones:
- These devices have an option in their settings to allow them to correct for time errors. Check the support documentation for your chosen authenticator app for additional information
iOS devices / phones:
- Ensure that these devices have the “Set Automatically” option turned on under the Date & Time setting to make sure that the clock is properly synced
