Authentication Failed when Signing in Using 2-Step Verification
Last Updated: October 4, 2024
Question: What should I do if I am receiving an error stating that authentication failed when trying to sign in to my Rockstar Games account with a 2-Step Verification code?
Answer: If you are receiving an error that your 2-Step Authentication failed, there is a chance that the authenticator you are using has become desynchronized with the 2-Step Verification service.
Ensure that your clock on your authenticator app / machine is set to the correct local time, date, and time zone
Enable any time sync settings on your authenticator app / program
On Android using Google Authenticator:
Go to the main menu on the Google Authenticator app
Select Settings
Select Time correction for codes
Select Sync now
On the next screen, the app will confirm that the time has been synced, and you should now be able to use your verification codes to sign in
Note: The sync will only affect the internal time of your Google Authenticator app, and will not change your device’s Date & Time settings.
On iOS:
Open the Settings app of your iPhone home screen
Select General
Select Date & Time
Disable Set Automatically Option and re-enable again
Reboot your device
Authenticator sync settings:
If your authenticator has an option to sync the clock, make sure it is enabled. Check the support documentation for your chosen authenticator app for additional information
Android / Windows phones:
These devices have an option in their settings to allow them to correct for time errors. Check the support documentation for your chosen authenticator app for additional information
iOS devices / phones:
Ensure that these devices have the “Set Automatically” option turned on under the Date & Time setting to make sure that the clock is properly synced
