NPCs that give quests are missing or dead in Red Dead Redemption

Question: An NPC that gave me a mission died and the mission failed. I returned to the question mark on the map, but the NPC is gone. How can I complete the mission?

Answer: Repeatedly save the game manually while at a house to advance the in-game time by several days until the NPC respawns. In some cases, this may take 3–5 in-game days.
