Error: Unable to launch RDR2.exe due to lack of privileges on the Game Library directory

Question: What can I do about the following error code when trying to launch Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC? 

  • Unable to launch RDR2.exe due to lack of privileges on the Game Library directory. Please remove any compatibility mode settings or try running as administrator. If you continue to have problems playing the game, please contact Rockstar Games Customer Service at https://support.rockstargames.com. 

Answer: This error usually occurs when either Red Dead Redemption 2 or the Rockstar Games Launcher are not running with administrator privileges on your PC. You can ensure that both the executable file and Rockstar Games Launcher are running under administrator privileges by doing the following: 

Run Rockstar Games Launcher as administrator 

  1. Close Red Dead Redemption 2 and the Rockstar Games Launcher 

  2. Right-click the Rockstar Games Launcher shortcut on your desktop and select Properties 

  3. Select Compatibility 

  4. Select Change settings for all users 

  5. Select Run this program as an administrator  

  6. Select OK 

Run Red Dead Redemption 2 as administrator 

  1. Launch the Rockstar Games Launcher 

  2. Select Settings 

  3. Select Red Dead Redemption 2 under My Installed Games  

  4. Select Open on View installation folder 

  5. Locate and right-click RDR2, then select Properties 

  6. Select Compatibility 

  7. Select Change settings for all users 

  8. Enable Run this program as an administrator 

  9. Select OK 

  10. Launch Red Dead Redemption 2 to see if the issue resolved
