Grand Theft Auto Online Connection Troubleshooting for PlayStation 5

Last Updated: July 5, 2024

Question: I am playing GTA Online on the PlayStation 5, and I am having trouble staying connected to other players. Some of the error messages I have seen include saving failed, session timed out or ended due to an unknown network error, the game is unable to find a compatible session, or Rockstar Games Services are unavailable. How can I improve my connection?

Answer: Below you can find information on how to verify that your Network Address Translation (NAT) Types are set correctly, as well as steps for clearing your system cache, checking if your connection speed meets the minimum requirements, verifying you have the correct network ports open, and performing a common router settings check.

Check the GTA Online Server Status

Check our GTA Online Server Status page to rule out an outage or scheduled maintenance:

If the GTA Online status currently says UP, the problem may be related to some connection types conflicting with other players, or other problems with your network setup.

Check your Internet Connection Speed

You can check your connection speed with an online speed test, like the one below:

Good targets for minimum upload and download speeds are:

  • Download Speed: 7.5 Mbps

  • Upload Speed (recommended): 1 Mbps

  • Upload Speed (minimum): 0.5 Mbps

Note: If you are on a wireless connection, it may be a good idea to try using a wired Ethernet connection and see if you are still having issues.

Clear your Cache

You can clear your PS5 system cache by following the steps below

  1. Hold the PS button on your controller

  2. Select Turn Off PS5

  3. Wait until the PS5 power indicator light shuts off

  4. Hold the power button on the console until you hear a second beep

    • This will take about 7 seconds

  5. Connect your controller to the console using the USB cable, then press the PS button

  6. Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, then Select Clear Cache

  7. Select OK

  8. Wait for the PS5 to restart on its own

Check NAT Type settings

A more open NAT Type will have fewer conflicts with other player systems and encounter less connectivity issues.

NAT Type Settings

  1. Open your console’s home screen

  2. Scroll over to the Settings gear on the top right of the screen

  3. Select Network

  4. Scroll over Connection Status and select Test Internet Connection

  5. After the test is complete, your NAT Type will be displayed on the screen. Please refer to the NAT Type Definitions section below to determine your console’s connectivity

NAT Type Definitions

  • NAT Type 1: Can play games with any NAT type. Usually, the system is connected to the Internet without a router

  • NAT Type 2: Can play games with open or moderate NAT types. Like Type 1, except connected to the Internet through a router

  • NAT Type 3: Can only play games with open NAT types

Check your Firewall / Router for NAT Type restrictions

If you have a firewall or other network hardware, such as a router, you may need to access them to change your NAT type. Sometimes, this configuration change is caused by opening or forwarding other network ports.

Check your Open Network Ports

PlayStation Network uses the following ports for communication with game servers:

  • Port 80 (TCP)

  • Port 443 (TCP)

  • Port 3478 (UDP and TCP)

  • Port 3479 (UDP and TCP)

  • Port 3480 (TCP)

GTA Online requires the following ports to be open:

  • Port 6672 (UDP)

  • Port 61455 (UDP)

  • Port 61457 (UDP)

  • Port 61456 (UDP)

  • Port 61458 (UDP)

Change your Domain Name Servers (DNS)

  1. Open your console’s home screen

  2. Scroll over to the Settings gear on the top right of the screen

  3. Select Network

  4. Scroll over Settings and select Set Up Internet Connection

  5. Scroll over your Wi-Fi network/LAN (depending on what you use to connect) and press the Options ≡ button on your controller

  6. Select Advanced Settings

  7. Select the following fields and enter the following details:

    • IP Address Settings = Automatic

    • DHCP Host = Don’t Specify

    • DNS Settings = Manual

    • Primary DNS = 8.8.8.8

    • Secondary DNS = 8.8.4.4

    • Proxy Server = Don’t Use

    • MTU Settings = Automatic

Reset Your Network Router

You can reset your router by unplugging it and leaving it unplugged for about 10 minutes. Restart the game client and check to see if your issue is resolved.
