Troubleshooting PS3 Audio Problems
Last Updated: July 6, 2023
Question: I am not getting any sound on my PlayStation 3. How do I resolve this?
Answer: The troubleshooting steps below should help resolve most audio issues on PS3. If these do not resolve your issue, please consult your manual or PlayStation support.
Check Audio Format Compatibility
Start by confirming the formats supported by your audio device. Settings vary depending on supported formats. For details, refer to the instructions supplied with the audio device.
Select Settings > Sound Settings.
Select Audio Output Settings.
Select the input connector on the audio device. Channel numbers and audio formats that are supported vary depending on the connector in use.

Select audio output formats.
Select all output formats that are supported by the audio device in use.
If Audio Input Connector / SCART / AV MULTI was selected, the screen for selecting audio output formats will not be displayed.
If HDMI is selected, you can also select to automatically set the audio output format.
The HDMI device must be turned on.
Check your settings.
You can go back to the previous screen and revise the settings by pressing the back button.
Save your settings.
The audio output settings are saved on the system.
Notes:
[Linear PCM 2 Ch.] audio is set to be output from all output connectors by default.
If you change the audio output settings, audio will be output only from the connectors that were set.
If you change the audio output settings, the system will no longer be able to output audio from multiple output connectors at the same time.
For example, if 1) your system is connected to a TV via an HDMI cable and to an audio device via a digital optical cable and 2) you switch to Digital Out Optical under Audio Output Settings, then audio will no longer be output from the TV.
To output audio from the TV, switch the setting to HDMI, or select Settings > Sound Settings > Audio Multi-Output > On.
If you have selected [Linear PCM 2 Ch. 88.2 kHz] or [Linear PCM 2 Ch. 176.4 kHz], sound may be intermittent or may not be emitted from some audio devices.
If a device that is not compatible with the HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) standard is connected to the system using an HDMI cable, video and/or audio cannot be output from the system.
