Inability to Log In to Rockstar Games in Some Legacy Titles Using Special Characters in Passwords

Last Updated: January 9, 2025

Question: I have some special characters in my Rockstar Games password and can’t log into Rockstar Games in some older Rockstar titles. Is there a workaround? How can I change my password?

Answer: In GTAV and on the Rockstar Games website, the following special characters are supported in passwords:

"`-=~!@#$%^&*()_+[]\{}|;':",./<>? and also spaces.

Some Rockstar Games titles do not support all of those characters in-game. They may not be seen on the in-game keyboard, or trying to log in may result in generic “login failed” error messages. Games that do not support all special characters include:

  • Max Payne 3

  • L.A. Noire

  • Red Dead Redemption

  • Mobile titles for iOS/Android/Windows Mobile

  • Grand Theft Auto IV

There are a few ways to resolve this issue if you can’t log into an older game:

  • For console titles, link your Gamertag or PSN ID to your Rockstar Games account on the Linked Accounts page at the Rockstar Games website: After your platform account is linked to Rockstar Games via the web, console titles will log you in to Rockstar Games automatically.

  • Change your password on the Rockstar Games website: This can be done by logging in to the Rockstar Games site, clicking the gear icon in the upper right, and choosing Settings. The following special characters are supported across all platforms and titles: !$^*-_.;

  • Request a password change email to be sent to your email address: To request a password change, go to https://signin.rockstargames.com/forgotten-password?cid=rsgsupport.
