Question: What can I do about the following error message when launching Red Dead Redemption?

  • The game has failed to start because the GPU does not meet the following requirement: D3D_FEATURE_LEVEL_11_0

Answer: This issue can occur when attempting to run a game on a graphics card that is not compatible with DirectX 12. To resolve this issue, try the following steps.

Check that your GPU is compatible with DirectX 12

First, make sure your system has the latest Windows updates. You can do this using the following steps:

  1. Select Start

  2. Select Settings

  3. Select Updates & Security

  4. If it does not say you are up to date, select Check for updates

To check your graphics card’s compatibility with DirectX 12 or later, use the following steps:

  1. Press the Windows key + R

  2. Type ‘dxdiag’ and select OK

  3. Select the System tab in the DirectX Diagnostic Tool

  4. Locate your installed version of DirectX

  5. Cross-reference your version of DirectX with your graphics card manufacturer to check that they are compatible

Multiple GPUs

If your system has more than one GPU, make sure to set Red Dead Redemption to your preferred GPU using the steps below:

  1. Type ‘Graphics Settings’ in the Start Menu

  2. Select the results from System Settings

  3. Select Desktop App

  4. Select Browse and locate Red Dead Redemption’s installation directory

    • Default location: C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Red Dead Redemption

  5. Select the Red Dead Redemption .exe file

  6. Select Add

  7. Select Options

  8. Set the application to your preferred GPU

  9. Select Save
