General Troubleshooting for GTAIV on PC

Question: What should I do if I am experiencing issues running GTAIV on my PC?

Answer: If you are unable to get a smooth gameplay experience by adjusting your settings we would suggest following the steps below:

Update the Game

As the game has been updated since release, it has also been further optimized to improve performance. To ensure you are running the latest version please apply the following patch manually:  http://updates.rockstargames.com/patches/gtaiv/title_update_7_EN.zip

Virtual Memory

Grand Theft Auto IV requires virtual memory to run properly. If your virtual memory settings are not correct, you may experience performance or stability issues. Please follow the steps below to correctly configure this Windows setting:

  1. From the start menu, open your Control Panel.

  2. Double click the System icon. (You may need to select List or Icon view first)

  3. Select Advanced System Settings. (Skip this step for XP)

  4. Select the Advanced tab.

  5. Click on the Performance/Settings button.

  6. Select the Advanced tab.

  7. Click on the Virtual memory/Change button.

If you are using Windows XP:

  1. Select the drive that has the game installed.

  2. Select the "System managed size" radio button in the "Paging file size for selected drive."

If you are using Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10:

  1. Check "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives."

  2. Now click the Set button and restart if prompted.

Benchmark

If all else fails, please run the benchmarking utility and submit the results to us. To do this, pause the game and select ‘Graphics’ and then ‘Benchmark’, please note that this will interrupt your current game, be sure to save any progress before running the benchmark untility.

Once complete the results of this test are saved to Documents\Rockstar Games\GTAIV\Benchmarks
