Last Updated: September 29, 2025

Question: What should I do if I receive the following error while playing Red Dead Online?

  • Unable to join. Failed to retrieve session details from the target player. (Error: 27140000)

Answer: This error occurs when you are experiencing network connectivity problems. Below are some steps that may resolve the issue.

Check your network connection and Rockstar Games Service availability

Reset your network router

You can reset your router by unplugging it and leaving it unplugged for about 10 minutes. Restart the game client and check to see if your issue is resolved.

Check your internet connection speed

Use an online speed test to measure your connection speed (e.g. https://www.speedtest.net/). Below are good targets for minimum upload and download speeds:

  • Download Speed: 7.5 Mbps

  • Upload Speed (recommended): 1 Mbps

  • Upload Speed (minimum): .5 Mbps

Note: If you are on a wireless connection and still having issues, try a wired connection.

Check your open network ports

The Xbox network requires the following ports to be open:

  • Port 88 (UDP)

  • Port 53 (UDP and TCP)

  • Port 3544 (UDP)

  • Port 4500 (UDP)

We recommend the following additional ports to be opened for Red Dead Online:

  • Port 500 (UDP)

  • Port 3047 (UDP)

  • Port 6672 (UDP)

  • Port 61455 (UDP)

  • Port 61456 (UDP)

  • Port 61457 (UDP)

  • Port 61458 (UDP)

  • Ports 30211-30217 (TCP)

Change your Domain Name Servers (DNS)

  1. Open the guide by pressing the Xbox button on your controller

  2. Move right to the System tab

  3. Select Settings

  4. Select Network

  5. Select Network settings

  6. Select Advanced settings

    • Make sure to write down your existing DNS servers from this screen

  7. Select DNS settings

  8. Select Manual

  9. Enter the following DNS servers:

    • If using IPv4:

      • Primary DNS: 8.8.8.8

      • Secondary DNS: 8.8.4.4

      • Primary DNS: 2001:4860:4860::8888

      • Secondary DNS: 2001:4860:4860::8844

Clear your system cache

Temporary files and data are often stored on the console to help the overall performance of the game. Unfortunately, these cached files can get corrupted over time which can lead to things like freezes, game loading errors or connectivity issues. To clear your console’s cache, try the following steps:

  1. Press and hold the power button on the front of the console until the Xbox One completely shuts down

  2. Once the indicator lights on the front of the Xbox One and the console’s power brick are off, disconnect the power brick from the back of your console

  3. Wait at least 30 seconds

  4. Plug the power brick back into your Xbox One and turn it on

  5. Boot up the game

Check your Network Address Translation (NAT) Type settings

A more open NAT Type will have fewer conflicts with other player systems and encounter less connectivity issues. NAT Type Setting

  1. Navigate to the System panel and choose Settings

  2. Highlight Network and select Network Settings

    • This should display your NAT Type and connection type

    • A more open NAT Type will have fewer conflicts with other player systems and encounter less connectivity issues with other players

NAT Type Definitions

  • OPEN NAT Type: Can play games with any NAT type

  • MODERATE NAT Type: Can play games with open or moderate NAT types

  • STRICT NAT Type: Can only play games with open NAT types

Note: If the NAT Type shows as Unknown, select Test NAT Type.
