Grand Theft Auto V crashing with D3DERR_DEVICELOST error on PC
Last Updated: April 26, 2024
Question: How can I stop Grand Theft Auto V from crashing with the following error "Reset failed with D3DERR_DEVICELOST"?
Answer: D3DERR_DEVICELOST errors are usually caused by an issue with the graphics drivers on the system. This can be a conflict with DirectX 3D drivers or display drivers for your video card (such as the NVIDIA display drivers for GT, GTX & RTX cards or Radeon drivers for the AMD Radeon RX and RX Vega cards). You can try to update the drivers or perform a clean install of the drivers for your graphics card to resolve this issue.
Update your graphics drivers
NVIDIA cards: Select Check for Updates in the top-right of the GeForce Experience application.AMD cards: Select Updates under Radeon Settings menu of the Radeon Software application.
Perform a clean installation of the graphics drivers
NVIDIA cards:
Perform a clean install of your drivers: https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2900/
Note: Make sure you select the "Perform Clean Install" option when reinstalling your drivers. A "clean install" deletes the currently installed NVIDIA drivers as well as cached packages first and then installs the newer driver.
AMD cards:
Uninstall the Radeon Software from your system: https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/faq/rs-uninstall
Restart your system
Install the latest version of the Radeon Software: https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/faq/rs-install
