'No Audio Hardware' message in GTA:VC, even with a sound card!

Last Updated: January 2, 2024

Question: I get a "No Audio Hardware" message in the game. I really do have a sound card!

Answer: If you receive a "No Audio Hardware" error message, or you are playing the game and are not hearing some sound effects, this may be caused by your sound card not being selected as the computer's primary device to play sounds. Do the following to change it back:

-> Click on the "Start" button, then on "Settings," then "Control Panel." NOTE: XP Users--click on "Start" and then "Control Panel."-> On that menu, click on "Sound & Audio Devices" or "Sound & Multimedia."-> Click on the "Audio" tab near the top of the window.-> In the "Playback" section at the top, make sure your Sound Card is selected in the "Preferred Device" section; you can change it by clicking on the down-arrow button to the right of the window.

NOTE: Special note for those with the "Total Recorder" application installed.

In the "Total Recorder" program, you can change your program preferences to allow your Sound Card to be read by other programs. Do the following.

-> On the Total Recorder main screen, click on the "Options" button on the toolbar. Move your pointer across and down to click on "Settings."-> About half-way down in that window, there will be a button option labeled "Audio Playback and Recording Devices Selected Above." Click this button.
