Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC crashing under custom virtual memory settings

Last Updated: April 29, 2024

Question: Red Dead Redemption 2 crashing intermittently while playing the game. Does adjusting the page file or virtual memory settings help?

Answer: Adjusting the page file or manually configuring how Windows manages virtual memory can result in Red Dead Redemption 2 crashing. Setting windows to automatically manage virtual memory may resolve the cause of these crashes.

NOTE: If you have not adjusted the way your system manages virtual memory you do not need to perform these steps.

Setting Windows to manage Virtual Memory

  • Open Windows System Properties(Default: Windows Key + Pause / Break Key)

  • Under the System Properties Advanced Tab select Settings under Performance

  • Under the Performance Options Tab select the Advanced Tab

  • Under Virtual Memory select Change

  • Make sure that Automatically manage paging file size for all drives is checked

  • Select OK and close all open System Properties Tabs

  • When prompted, Click Restart Now
