No sound in GTA:VC with Integrated Sound Chipsets

Last Updated: January 22, 2024

Question: No sound effects can be heard from any source while in-game. The game runs correctly other than this issue.  What can I do?

Answer: We have found certain motherboard based sound chipsets do not report having a hardware sound buffer, and crash with Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. To fix the problem it is possible to change the level of sound acceleration by following the steps below.

  1. Click on Start and choose Run

  2. Type "DXDIAG" (without the quotes)

  3. Press OK

  4. Select the sound tab and move the sound acceleration slider bar to Basic Acceleration

  5. Click the test directsound button and click yes to after each sound is heard.  After a number of tests, you will receive a prompt that directx will run with a software buffer

  6. Press OK and run the game again
