Freemode Events Information for GTA Online on PS4, Xbox One, and PC

Last Updated: February 25, 2024

Question: I’m having trouble finding a lobby in which to play Hunt the Beast. Any tips?

Answer: Freemode Events are set up to launch the full variety of Events, so Events do not usually repeat if they’ve been recently played in that session. Also, different Events require a different minimum number of players before they trigger -- Hunt the Beast requires a minimum of 10 players in session before it can be launched.

Question: Where can I expect to see notifications to join an Event?

Answer: Purple notifications will appear in the top left corner of your screen with instructions on how to join an Event when it’s about to start. In some cases, you may need to travel to a designated location or find a vehicle before participating.

Question: What if I don't want to take part in a Freemode Event?

Answer: All Freemode Events are voluntary. If you don’t want to participate, no action is required. Some Events, such as Criminal Damage or the Longest Wheelie challenge, may present a scoreboard on your screen for the few minutes that the Event is active. Participation is not required. If you’d like to turn off Freemode Event notifications, you can choose to hide it using the Interaction Menu. Select the “Hide Options” feature, then choose “Events”. In this menu, you can choose to hide all Events, or just those you’d rather not see. You can always unhide Events in the same menu.

Question: Can I play with just my Crew or in a private session?

Answer: Yes, Freemode Events are available in private sessions; however, many Freemode Events require a minimum number of participants in order to begin. Time Trials are not available in private or solo sessions.

Question: Will I receive a Bad Sport rating if I blow up someone's car during an Event?

Answer: You will not receive a Bad Sport or Mental State increase for destroying an active participant’s vehicle while playing in a competitive Event that requires the use of weapons or combat. For a list of such events, please see the bottom of this page. You will receive a Bad Sport or Mental State rating increase for destroying vehicles in Checkpoint Challenge, Time Trials, and most Challenges. Vehicles destroyed from participating in combative Events can be recovered free of charge after the Event from Mors Mutual Insurance.

Question: Do I get a Bad Sport rating for leaving a Freemode Event?

Answer: While Bad Sport ratings are disabled when actively participating in certain Freemode Events, players will receive a Bad Sport rating increase for leaving a session when playing as a “critical player.” For example, if you are playing as the Beast in “Hunt the Beast” and leave the session (causing the Event to end for everyone else) you will receive a Bad Sport rating increase. In Kill List and Kill List Competitive, players can also receive a Bad Sport rating by leaving a session while in the Event start zone, but only if that Event requires a minimum number of participants.

Question: How does Passive Mode work in Freemode Events?

Answer: Players are put into Passive Mode during specific Events to avoid non-participants attacking or otherwise changing the outcome of the Event for the participants. These Events include Penned In, Kill List, Kill List Competitive and Time Trials. If a player is in Passive Mode before a Freemode Event starts, they will be informed that they must disable Passive Mode in order to participate. If a player activates Passive Mode after the Event starts, they will be warned that they can no longer participate if they become Passive. Also, players cannot activate Passive Mode while they are a Critical Player, for example while holding a package, driving a target vehicle, playing as the Beast, etc.

Question: Do I have to pay to get my cars back if they are destroyed during an Event?

Answer: If your personal vehicle is destroyed during a combative Freemode Event, you can recover it free of charge from Mors Mutual Insurance and have it delivered by your Mechanic at no cost. For a list of such events, please see the bottom of this page.

Question: Do I have to pay to fix my car if it gets damaged during an Event?

Answer: Mors Mutual Insurance will replace vehicles destroyed during certain combative Events at no cost, but players will be responsible for repairing a damaged vehicle. Cash is awarded to players just for participating in the Event which can help cover the cost of vehicle repair.

Question: How do I share money with someone after completing a Freemode Event?Answer: Share your Event winnings with players who helped you out via the Interaction Menu. Navigate to the “Inventory” menu, and in the “Cash” section, select the “Share Cash from Last Job” option. From there, choose the player and amount you’d like to share and hit “Accept”.

Question: How do I launch the new Adversary Modes?

Answer: To launch Cross the Line or Hunting Pack Adversary Modes, go to the Jobs menu in the Online tab of the pause menu. Scroll down to Rockstar Created and then select Adversary Modes to choose any of the available Jobs. These new modes will also be available via invite from Martin Madrazo as you play Freemode Events.

Question: When playing one of the new Freemode Events, I tried calling Lester and noticed that certain services were grayed out. Other contacts have services grayed out as well. Is this intended?

Answer: To keep Freemode Events competition balanced, some services are not available while participating in certain events. For instance, Lester’s “Off the Radar” option is not available during “Moving Target”, “Penned In”, “Hot Property”, “Hold the Wheel”, “Dead Drop”, “King of the Castle”, or “Hunt the Beast”. As an example, players playing “Hunt the Beast” as the beast cannot choose “Off the Radar” as they are off the radar already between collecting checkpoints, and being off the radar during the checkpoint collection would present an unfair advantage for the Beast.
