How to Resolve Strict NAT Type Errors in Grand Theft Auto Online on PC

Last Updated: January 23, 2026

Question: What does it mean when I receive an error message saying that my NAT type is Strict?

Answer: Your NAT type defines how your router or gateway translates your PC's private IP address and port to a public IP address and port for both inbound and outbound communication.

There are three general classifications of NAT types:

  • OPEN: Can play games with any other NAT type

  • MODERATE: Can play games with open or moderate NAT types

  • STRICT: Can only play against open NAT types

If your NAT type is Strict, your PC can only communicate in very limited ways with other players and games, so it’s recommended to use an Open or Moderate NAT type.

You can change your NAT type using the following methods:

Enable Universal Plug and Play (uPnP)

You can enable uPnP by doing the following:

  1. Open the Control Panel

  2. Select Network and Internet

  3. Select Network and Sharing Center

  4. In the left pane, click the link for Change advanced sharing settings

  5. In the Network Discovery section, select the option for Turn on network discovery

  6. Select Save changes
