Question: I downloaded Max Payne and can't get it to work in Windows Vista or Windows 7.   Help!

Answer: Max Payne does not support Windows Vista or Windows 7.  In many cases, however, we are able to get the game up and running.  Here are some things to try:

  • Running in various Windows compatibility modes (right click the application and go to Properties)
  • Running the setup.exe rather than the installer
  • Creating a custom resolution in the control panel or using regedit to modify the display entries in \Software\Remedy Entertainments\Max Payne\Video Settings (at your own risk -- please be careful!)
  • Roll back drivers to 32 bit rather than 64 bit (Nvidia drivers 196.75 to 197.34 appear to not be supported by the game)
  • If your sound is missing in parts of the game, there are some user-created workarounds available which have not been tested by Rockstar Games. Use of these workarounds are at your own risk.

What you need to do: Go to the folder that says movie and change it to _movie. That should work. It worked for me.
